With all-wheel drive, a Carrera 4 adds another dimension of control to the 911 concept: a degree of handling stability in wet weather or dry that goes beyond any sports car you've likely driven. A viscous coupling clutch reads wheel traction and distributes torque in relation to each wheel's grip on the road.

Along with a Dynamic Driving Differential (DDD), an innovation that regulates the torque split between the rear wheels, the Carrera 4 traction system significantly reduces the likelihood of over- or understeering. The third component of this equation is Automatic Brake Differential (ABD). If slippage is too much for DDD to handle, ABD redirects power to the wheel with traction, while simultaneously applying brake pressure to the slipping wheel until all four wheels regain grip. It all works so quickly you cannot sense its operation, only the net effect: enhanced driving performance.
