Yamaha CS-70M is a programmable analog giant from YAMAHA, second only to the mythical CS-80 (which is, by the way, almost impossible to find, and for sure impossibly heavy -- 90 kg). Maybe not so honored as its older brother, CS-70M still resembles a lot of the same sound quality, while the weight is slimmed down to a bearable one third of the afore mentioned number. This beautiful synth with classic look is also known as the last analog YAMAHA synthesizer before the digital era of DX 7. True thorough-bred polyphonic synth, with specific and distinguished analog sound, together with some special programming features and concepts. It has 6 voices, and a so called "dual channel" capability, instead of the classic 2-VCO (oscillator) per voice configuration. In total it still has 12 VCOs, but in addition to that also the 12 VCFs and 12 VCAs, instead of the usual one VCF and VCA per voice found on other comaparable synths. This enables you to mix two completely distinct sounds (programs), each using one VCO, one VCF and one VCA per voice, for a vast variety of combinations. Or, as another approach, two similar voices can be mixed for the classic, fat, two-oscillator chorus effect. Good filters, rich modulation matrix and versatile effects (with a nice chorus), just seek to be programmed. The keyboard has the after touch control that can be routed to many useful modulations for a greater expression. Special magnetic cards are provided for external memory. MIDI available from e.g. Kenton. (Send your email.) (The picture is gratefully taken from J. Kulomaa, where more in depth information can be found.)
